The Sounders trained on an artificial turf field today at Starfire. This after being on an artificial turf indoor field yesterday at VMAC and in advance of Saturday work at CenturyLink Field.
Coach Sigi Schmid was asked about the decision.
"We wanted to stay off the grass field right now if we can just because we don’t want to tear it up and have it be something that causes a problem for the rest of the season," he said. "So for me, to do these two days of training on the grass made no sense. We’ll see about going on the grass on Monday or Tuesday, but if we have to stay off the grass we’ll stay off the grass so by the time we come back in March it will be good."
Today's training session also was characterized by a cold and gusty wind in Tukwila.
Never miss a local story.
"Yesterday obviously it was climate-controlled inside," Schmid said. "... So for the guys we’ve been training in nice weather in Tucson. It was a little bit windy, but no rain, so that was good. We’re getting used to the elements again."
Meanwhile, the main news out of today's session was Schmid noting that second-round draft pick Jimmy Ockford is scheduled for a MRI on his injured knee this afternoon.
