The Sounders opened the Carolina Challenge Cup with a 2-1 win over Charleston with Cam Weave in goal and then continued it tonight with a 1-1 draw with Houston with Stefan Frei in goal.
Afterward, I asked coach Sigi Schmid if he is closing in on a decision regarding a starting keeper.
"Frei played well today," he said. "And Hahnemann’s played well as well. I think their goals-against are pretty close or pretty similar, but I don’t know."
That didn't seem to clarify a whole lot, so I asked Frei if he has a better idea of the goalkeeper pecking order.
Never miss a local story.
"I think it’s in the whole team. We’re tying to get the competition on all positions and that’s just going to force everybody to improve on a daily basis," he said. "Hopefully we can continue trying to improve in that way, by competing with each other."
More from Frei:
On how camp is going for him: Things are going good. The last two games are maybe not our prettiest games, but both of them we managed to find results, and we keep fighting, which I think is a really good thing. The team, we’re gelling, we’ve got really chemistry of young, old, experienced, experienced coming in new to the team. So it’s a really good mix. It’s also really encouraging to see how we train. I think everybody comes out to try to improve on a daily basis. We’re going to have to maintain that throughout the year, and that’s going to bring us success.
On the goal allowed tonight: It was a free kick on the left side, and all of a sudden they dumped it along the side and the guy was by himself by quite a few yards. Who knows (if he was offside). He tried to cut it back, and Chad smashed it against my head, so I really didn’t know where it went after that. It somehow ended up at Brad Davis’ feet and with his quality you don’t have to give him that chance twice, and he took it to the back of the net.
