Clint Dempsey's back-to-back selection as MLS player of the week has ended ... despite his assisting both goals in the Sounders' 2-1 win at Chivas USA on Saturday.
Here's the news from the league:
Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando was voted Major League Soccer Player of the Week by the North American Soccer Reporters (NASR) for Week 7 of the 2014 MLS season.
In a defensive battle Saturday night, Rimando was the star, helping Salt Lake keep the Portland Timbers scoreless by making three spectacular saves in the 1-0 win.
Never miss a local story.
In the 19th minute, Portland midfielder Darlington Nagbe received a pass in the midfield, beat three Salt Lake players and ripped a shot from point-blank range toward the upper 90. Rimando made a reaction save and punched the ball over the net to keep the game deadlocked at 0-0.
In the 85th minute, Timbers forward Gaston Fernandez played a beautifully measured pass to Alvas Powell in stride on the right side of the box. Powell sent a shot across goal, but Rimando made a kick-save with his right foot.
Rimando’s final save came in the 88th minute with Salt Lake up 1-0. Fernandez intercepted a pass in the Salt Lake’s defensive third and fired a left-footed shot from right outside the box toward the upper corner of the net. Rimando made a leaping save to preserve the shutout and ensure the victory.
This is the second Player of the Week honor for Rimando this season. Real Salt Lake return to action this Saturday at home against Vancouver Whitecaps FC (9:30 p.m. ET., MLS Live).
The MLS Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a panel of journalists from NASR. The group consists of members of members of print, television, radio and online media. More information and membership information can be found at http://www.soccerreporters.com/.
