That so-called three-week MLS World Cup break ended after about six days as most of the Sounders returned to training today at Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila in advance of their U.S. Open Cup match there Wednesday.
Here's some of what coach Sigi Schmid had to say after the relatively short session:
On the time away: I think it was good for the players. Always when you come back from the break I think it takes a couple of days to get back into the rhythm of things. ... There’s a few guys that we gave extra days to – that’s why we’re not all back yet. So we had some more days for a few guys. It would have been nice to have been able to give that to all the guys, but with the game coming up Wednesday we couldn’t afford to do that.
On how the returning players performed: We were OK. We wanted to get some ball work in, a little bit of a longer warm-up, get some running at the end just to see where our fitness is. It will be a better test tomorrow – see how we feel tomorrow – but it was what I expected for the first day.
