Sounders DP Clint Dempsey scored in the 34th second, getting the United States on their way to a 2-1 win over Ghana today in the World Cup opener for both teams.
Dempsey becomes the first American to score in three different World Cups. His goal was the fifth-earliest ever in a World Cup and the earliest ever for the USA. (However, Dempsey also got kicked in the nose. He finished the game, but said afterward that he believes it is broken.)
Sounders defender DeAndre Yedlin did not play. The result puts Germany and the USA atop the group with three points each, Portugal and Ghana at the bottom with none.
CONCACAF moves to 3-1 through the first round.
