The Sounders went through a light training session this morning at Starfire, while local families dotted the park with picnics and staking out good spots for the fireworks show tonight.
By then, the Sounders will be in Vancouver, where they will meet the Whitecaps at 7 p.m. Saturday.
We asked coach Sigi Schmid about training here and playing there on the holiday weekend.
"Somehow going to Canada on the Fourth of July has a unique quality to it for some reason," he said. "We’re going to miss the fireworks and stuff like that. I live right across the park in Bellevue – they have a big display there. … We’ve played on the Fourth before. With the Galaxy we always played at home on the Fourth, and we always seemed to get a tough opponent. And then we the Crew we never played at home. I don’t think we’ve ever played at home here on the Fourth either. If we’re playing away, I’d rather play on the fifth than play on the Fourth, because the Fourth becomes a big game for a lot of team, and they get a lot of people to the games and the teams are really jacked up for the games. So from that standpoint its nice to be playing a Canadian team. But it’s still going to be intense because it’s Cascadia Cup, and (the Whitecaps) haven’t done well since the break, and they’re going to be motivated and really in a very animated form."
No real news otherwise, although Schmid updated that DeAndre Yedlin is expected to re-join the team sometime this weekend, and Clint Dempsey sometime next week.
