Sounders win 4-2 after having fallen behind 1-0 and 2-1. Ends two-game losing streak, and moved back alone to the top of the table, at least until Los Angeles hosts New York tomorrow.
"It’s been a long patch of games," coach Sigi Schmid said. "To go on a 12-day road trip at this point of the season and play the amount of games that we have had to play in the last period of time is strenuous on our guys, and I was proud of their effort today. Especially, we put ourselves in maybe a difficult situation at the beginning of the game, and the ability to come back from that situation, I thought in the second half we managed the game pretty well. We could have had a few more. We were unlucky with Clint’s shot off the post, and a few more. But we were creating opportunites, we were controlling the ball, we weren’t giving much away anymore. And so I was pleased with that."
Obafemi Martins establishes a new single-season club record with 15 goals, and Martins-Clint Dempsey establish new single-season tandem record with 28 goals between them.
Seattle returns to action Oct. 5 at Colorado.
Never miss a local story.
I'll be back with notes and quotes.
Attendance: 38,713. Roughly five and half times Chivas' home average of 6,942.51'
GOAL Seattle. Oba sets single-season club record with 15th goal and tandem record with Dempsey. Sounders, 4-2. Assist Neagle. Sounders connected multiple passes in space about the size of a phone booth (for those of you who remember phone booths). Remarkable.
Second half: ... has begun. No changes.
Halftime: Sounders, 3-2. Schmid tells TV he's happy his team fought back, but can't give up goals like that.
Shots 8-5 SEA; on target 6-4 SEA; corners 2-1 SEA; duels won 51% CUSA; possession, 67.9% SEA.
ST: GOAL Sounders. Clint Dempsey from Oba. Sounders, 3-2. Martins-Dempsey match franchise record for most combined goals by two Sounders. (27, also by EJ & Montero in 2012.)
37' GOAL Sounders. Lamar Neagle behind Chivas defense. When exactly he got behind them is a question, but goal counts. 2-2.
18' GOAL Chivas. Own goal off of Anibaba in scramble in front of net after early shot smacks off crossbar. Goats, 2-1. Sounders have conceded nine goals over the past 200 minutes.
14' GOAL Seattle. Oba equalizes inside the far post from about 23 yards. Assist to Pappa. Martins' goal is his 14th of the season, tying Eddie Johnson's club record from 2012. Even at 1.
12' GOAL Chivas. Sounders defense gets terribly out of shape, and their recent run of conceding early goals continues. Torrez, his 15th. Chivas, 1-0.
First 10 minutes: Possession overwhelmingly to Seattle, but no real chances yet.
First kick: ... has been struck. We're under way. Sounders in rave/blue; Chivas in navy/white.
Lineups: Sounders: Frei; Yedlin, Marshall, Anibaba, Evans; Neagle, Azira, Alonso, Pappa; Martins, Dempsey. Reserves: reserves: Hahnemann, Rose, Barrett, Cooper, Traore, Okoli, Remick.
For Chivas: Kennedy; Kaji, Burling, Hurtado, Toia; Sturgis, Minda, Dunn, Barrera; Borja, Torres. Reserves: Spangenberg, Avila, Jean-Baptiste, Pelletieri, Chavez, Lochhead, Bolaños
Pregame: It's sunny with clouds around CenturyLink Field this morning, a couple of hours before the Sounders and Chivas USA meet, perhaps for the last time.
First kick is scheduled for 1 p.m. The game will be shown on JOEtv and heard on the usual radio outlets. We'll also keep the blog going before, during and after the match, with additional updates and comments on Twitter @donruiztnt.
