The Sounders training mostly in light rain this morning, continuing preparations for the visit from the LA Galaxy at noon Saturday. A win or a draw clinches Supporters Shield and top playoff seeding for Seattle.
Here's some of what they had to say:
Coach SIGI SCHMIDOn LA) a team that’s going to go after it obviously. I think they’re going to come at us and that’s my expectation. They know they’ve got to get a win in order to get the Supporters’ Shield, and we’ve got to react appropriately.
Lessons from last weekend) There’s always lessons we can draw upon. I thought we did a fairly good job defensively. Obviously not happy with the two gaols that were allowed. But when you look at it, both of the goals came sort of on the heels of us having good opportunites. One goal came off of Dempsey’s opportunity in the first half, and their second goal came off of Oba’s opportunity and a minute and a half later they score off the corner kick. WE’ve just got to continue to do what we did well. We know we were able to open them up, we know where we think the spaces are that we can exploit, and we just have to do a better job of that at times.
Never miss a local story.
On LA without Omar Gonzalez) Obviously, Omar is an important part of their team, and Omar and DeLaGarza have a pretty good working relationship with each other. When you go back to their college days, they’ve probably played 100 games together or so between college and the pros, and you can’t replicate that understanding. So for us, we have to take advantage of it. Obviously he’s also a big presence for them on set pieces. But on the same token, you can’t think oh this is a different. No it’s not. They have other competition players who will step in and play.
More on defense last weekend at LA) I thought we did a pretty good job of keeping the game in front of us for most of the game. I didn’t think we let them get in behind us, and I think we had a pretty good awareness of where Landon was and where Robbie was.
Defender CHAD MARSHALLOn 2-2 draw with LA) I think we were just very aware of our line. I think communication was good last game. Obviously we know they’re dangerous players, and if we can keep them in front of us and not let them get behind, then that will be a good thing.
On trying to repeat those successes: It’s always going to be tough playing against those guys. I’m sure they’ll look at different ways that they can try and use them, and we’ll have to be ready for that. I’m sure it will be a tough test.
On Omar Gonzalez out) He’s huge for them. But they’re a deep team like we are, so someone will step up. It’s still going to be a tough game. We can’t look at it like, oh Omar is out so we’re going to get a ton of shots. They’re going to be good defensively, so I don’t think it changes much.
On knowing a draw is enough) I don’t think we can look at it that way. It’s nice knowing that a draw does it, but we can’t come in trying to get a draw and defending for 90 minutes. We’ve got to play our game, and try to impose ourselves on them and make them defend. If we draw I’m OK with it. ... If we don’t allow a goal, then we’re supporters Shield champion.
Midfielder LAMAR NEAGLEOn the rematch: It’s huge. For the Supporters Shield, this is what it all comes down to. It’s kind of funny how it all worked out: This is the very last game, it’s against LA, it’s in Seattle. Kind of picture perfect. I hope we can finish it off.
On Omar Gonzalez out) They’re still a good team no matter what. If you take one of our players away we have guys that can step in, and they’re the same. But he’s a huge presence obviously, one of those guys that’s kind of irreplacing. But still they’re going to have guys that can step in, I would think.
On his assists this season) I think just trying to improve every year, getting comfortable playing the position that I’m playing. I’ve been playing with these guys for a couple of years now, so I thnk we all mesch together well, and that accounts for it.
On losing Cascadia Cup in a situation similar to this week with Supporters' Shield) It was a disappointment obviously. We wanted to win that. It was a great piece for our fans, a great piece of silverware. Definitely devastating. We don’t want anything to slip through. I think we definitely should have had that obviously, and we should have the supporters shield.
