It’s gone final, Fanendo Adi scoring the pair of late goals that made the difference, as Portland won 4-1 over the Sounders at Providence Park.
Darlington Nagbe had given the Timbers their first lead in the12th minute, but Lamar Neagle equalized in the 39th minute, and that’s where things stood until Adi’s brace in the 74th and 76th minutes.
Rodney Wallace added the last one in stoppage time.
Here's Sigi Schmid's opening statement:
Never miss a local story.
Portland was the better team. It was a deserved victory. I don’t know if the score line was exactly deserved. They were all over us in the first 30 minutes. We got ourselves in the game with the free-kick goal. I thought the first 15 minutes of the second half we played well – I thought that was our best phase. But then we just made silly errors at the end and just weren’t alert enough, so they the deserved victor.
It’s the Sounders third-straight loss, one short of the club record (2013).
Seattle falls to 9-7-2 and remains three points behind Vancouver in the West, six behind DC for Supporters Shield and now just one point ahead of Portland (8-6-4).
In the Cascadia Cup, it’s now Seattle 2-1-0, Vancouver 1-1-1 and Portland 1-2-1.
ST: GOAL Timbers. Wallace this time, making it 4-1.
76' GOAL Timbers. Adi again, this time an absolute rocket following Sounders turnover. Portland 3-1 & as loud an away stadium as I've heard.
74' GOAL Timbers. Sounders defense stretched by Nagbe run, He finds Adi in front and he finishes top right corner. Portland, 2-1.
69: Roldan for Rose.
60: Andy Craven on in his MLS debut, replacing Barrett.
Second half: ... has begun. No changes.
HT: Portland 1, Sounders 1. Sounders will take it, but they have issues to deal with at half.
Shots 11-3 POR; on target 6-1 POR; corners 3-0 POR; duels won 51.4% POR; pass accuracy 78.2-75.4 POR; possession 51 SEA.
39' GOAL Sounders. Lamar Neagle runs onto long diagonal free kick from Mears and Providence Park quites considerably. 1-1. Sounders finally score without a DP on the field. And it is expected that a DP -- Alonso -- will finally be on the field Friday.
30' Timbers up 1-0 and looking far more dangerous. About as good as a Sounders' opponent has looked this season.
17' Yellow to Pineda.
12' GOAL Timbers. Brillant strike by Nagbe from 25 yards.First kick: ... has been struck. Here we go. Great tifo raised by Timbers Army.
Lineups: For Sounders: Sounders: Frei; Mears, Evans, Marshall, Fisher; Rose, Azira, Pineda, Pappa; Barrett, Neagle. Reserves: Perkins, Scott, Remick, Roldan, Thomás, Craven, Jones.
Gonzalez had been billed as game-day decision. Remick maybe just rest after Philly. Alonso a bit of surprise out. Evans bit of surprise. And newly signed Craven in the 18.
I'm told neither Gonzalez or Alonso took the trip down.
For Portland: Kwarasey, Powell, Borchers, Paparatto, Villafana, Johnson ©, Chara, Valeri, Fernandez, Nagbe, Adi. Reserves: Weber, Peay, Jeanderson, Jewsbury, Wallace, Nanchoff, Urruti.
Pregame: Three hours before the Sounders and Timbers first kick at Providence Park, there is still cloud cover in Portland, and a light breeze helping with the warm, muggy air. If those clouds burn off by game time, the predicted 90-degrees will matter.
