On Friberg: He’s well liked and respected within our organization from both a coaching and player perspective. I think he’s going to be a good fit, and a player who can make an impact in the short term and the long term. Also pretty versatile: He can play a couple of different spots, and I think as a result can really raise the competition level at midfield. That’s a good thing for everybody.
On if he's brought in as a likely starter: We never promise anybody anything: That is earned. Do we think he has the ability to earn that through competing in practice: We do.
On his best position for the team: The cliché in my business is that the players make the decisions. Sigi’s going to look at him in practice and put him where we need him and where he’s the best fit. But I actually think Erik will probably end up playing multiple spots for us, and I think he can play any of the four spots in midfield.
On if paperwork should allow July 11 debut in Chicago: I would say it’s possible, but it’s certainly way out of our control, so speculating on that point isn’t worth a whole lot. I’d say you have three separate hurdles: obviously you have the transfer window opening July 8, you have to get the visa and you have to get the player pass. Is it possible before Chicago? It is. Is it likely? I just couldn’t tell you.
Never miss a local story.
On if more deals expected during transfer window: I would say that we’re going to keep all our options open. But with the signings of Friberg, Thomas and Andy Craven, we have a full roster right now. That hardly means that you can’t do anything, you just have to move one in, one out from here forward. And you have the ability – to be clear – that if you have injured players you can put them on the disabled list to free up a roster spot. Pineda and Pappa recently got their green cards, so we have their international spots available. We can make a roster spot with a disabled list move. And so it’s possible for us to do something. But whether we will or we won’t that’s probably going to depend a lot on what we think our team looks like when we have our full team together.
