Talk about finding an offensive groove at the right time.
Bonney Lake High pounded out 12 hits, scoring 18 runs in an 18-8 victory over Mount Rainier in the Class 3A South Puget Sound/Seamount League sub-district on Saturday night at Russell Road Park in Kent.
The Panthers earned the No. 1 seed to the bi-district tournament, where they play Capital at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
“The guys kind of knew that we were going to score some runs … we had that feeling,” Bonney Lake coach Mike Olson said. “Our bats have been really working well for us the last three weeks or so.”
But the Panthers’ starting pitching struggled.
Bonney Lake starter Ryan Hendrix failed to record an out in the first inning, allowing the first seven Mount Rainier batters to reach base. The Rams (18-3) capitalized, scoring runs on a Kyle Johnson RBI single and a pair of two-run singles by Chris Badley and Daunte Santos to take a 5-1 lead.
But the Panthers scored three runs in the top of the third to get back in the game, taking advantage of three walks by Rams starter Tyler Freudenthal and a wild pitch by reliever Brian Alexander.
Tied at 5 in the fifth, Bonney Lake took the lead on a sacrifice fly by Cody Resser and added a run on an RBI single by Jesse Mayfield, who finished 2-for-3 with two doubles and two RBI. The big blow in the inning came when Ryan Journey hit a booming fly ball to center, which Desmond Santos lost in the night sky. The ball dropped in for a two-run double, giving Bonney Lake a 9-5 lead.
The Panthers (15-5) also took advantage of shaky pitching by Mount Rainier, which earned the No. 2 seed. The Rams’ five pitchers struggled with their control, walking 16 batters and hitting three.
Jeremy Wik picked up the win for the Panthers in relief, allowing no runs in five innings.
Auburn 4, Hazen 0: Senior Colton Brown tossed a complete game shutout, striking out 15 for the Trojans.
Auburn earned the No. 3 seed to the bi-district tournament, Hazen the No. 4
Auburn Riverside 5, Highline 4: The Ravens (16-7) took advantage of four errors and scored four runs in the top of the fifth to break a 1-1 tie. Cam Fairfield got the win in relief and Ethan Romanoff closed out the Pirates (13-7) to record the save. The Ravens earned the No. 5 seed, and will play Port Angeles at Puyallup’s Heritage Field in the bi-district tournament. Highline is the No. 6 seed.
