Sonics hire Weaver from Jazz as assistant GM
Published: May 9th, 2008 01:00 AM
Seattle SuperSonics general manager Sam Presti didn’t take long to replace departed assistant general manager Scott Perry.

Presti announced Thursday that former Utah Jazz player personnel director Troy Weaver is joining the Sonics as the assistant general manager.

Weaver replaces Perry, who spent one season with Seattle before returning to the Detroit Pistons as their vice president of basketball operations.

Weaver has certain strengths that Presti wants in the job, with a background both as a talent evaluator and a coach.

Weaver played a pivotal role in Utah drafting guards Deron Williams, C.J. Miles and Ronnie Brewer, and forward Paul Millsap.

Weaver spent four seasons with the Jazz – the first three as the team’s head scout.

“Troy comes from a very successful organization in Utah,” Presti said in a statement. “He has a terrific array of personnel and coaching experience that will positively impact what we are trying to build here with the SuperSonics.”

Weaver will work with current assistant GM Rich Cho, who is entering his 11th season with the Sonics and is the team’s salary cap specialist.

Before Utah, Weaver worked as an assistant coach at Syracuse, where he was responsible for recruiting Carmelo Anthony to the Orange’s 2003 NCAA championship team. Weaver also was an assistant at New Mexico for one season and at Pittsburgh for three years.

Weaver also has connections to Kevin Durant and Jeff Green. He coached AAU basketball in the Washington, D.C., area, where Durant played, from 1993 to 1996. He also tried to recruit Green to Syracuse.

Sonics to host mini-camp

The Sonics will hold a two-day mini-camp next week at the Furtado Center.

The invitation-only camp May 15-16 will bring together players from the NBA Development League and professionals from overseas.

Presti said the team will use the camp as another chance to evaluate players who could be on the team’s summer camp roster.

The Sonics already got a glimpse at three players who might wind up on their summer league team, signing point guards Mike Wilks and Eddie Gill and small forward Ronald Dupree to 10-day contracts during the season.

Documents remain sealed

A federal judge ruled documents subpoenaed from a group that attempted to buy the Seattle SuperSonics from their Oklahoma-based owners can remain sealed.

U.S. District Judge Martha Pechman ruled Thursday that documents from Seattle developer Matt Griffin’s group that were labeled for “attorney’s eyes only” can remain confidential.

In seeking to have the documents unsealed, attorneys for Sonics owner Clay Bennett accused the potential owners and the city of Seattle of duplicity in an effort to force him to sell the team.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
