The action might be a little slow for anglers on Puget Sound, but they are finding plenty of variety in the water.
Want to catch pinks? The staff at the Point Defiance Boathouse Marina suggests trying the mouth of the Puyallup River.
Want kings? The boathouse staff recommends the Gig Harbor shoreline.
Silvers? Try the Dalco Passage.
Coho and humpies? Edmonds south to the Shilshole Bay Marina has been excellent, said Mike Chamberlain of Ted’s Sports Center near Lynnwood.
“It might not be red-hot,” Chamberlain said, “but there are a lot of opportunities out there right now.”
Salt water
South Sound: The action has been pretty slow, according to Zittel’s Johnson Point Marina. However, some anglers are doing well at Devil’s Head and near Lyle Point on Anderson Island.
North Sound: Chamberlain says anglers are having good luck catching pinks near Edmonds and off the shore on Whidbey Island.
Sekiu: The staff at Olson’s Resort reports anglers are having luck catching silvers. The average size is between 5 and 8 pounds, with one angler landing a 17-pounder. According to Olsonsresort.com, spoons, flies and buzz bombs are all catching fish.
Rivers
Puyallup: Red bait, pink bait, orange bait, corkies, yarn, it all seems to be working on the Puyallup right now. “It’s a madhouse,” said Keith Semprimoznik of Work, Sports & Outdoors in Orting. “It doesn’t seem to matter what you put in front of them.”
Carbon: Mark your calendars for Sept. 1, when this river opens. “That’s going to be a madhouse, too,” Semprimoznik said.
Kalama: Steelhead catching has been good, said Wayne Orzel of Pritchard’s Western Angler.
Skagit: Anglers here are doing well catching pinks and the occasional coho.
Skokomish: A good place to go if you are looking to land chinook. “A lot of people have been going there,” Chamberlain said. “It’s been really good.”
Snohomish: Salmon fishing has been OK, but Chamberlain says the river should come into its own next month.
Lakes
American: David Anderson of Bill’s Boathouse said, “Shrimp is the bait of choice for those who want to be sure to catch fish.” Anderson said one angler caught his limit in less than two hours – his first fish in five minutes – on Tuesday morning while using shrimp near the bottom of the lake.
Harts: Bass, bluegill, catfish and perch are all biting.
Offut: Trout anglers trying their luck on the edge of the lily pads are doing best.
Stevens: “Lake fishing is the bleakest thing right now,” Chamberlain said. However, some anglers are catching kokanee here.
Chelan: Anton Jones of Darrell & Dad’s Family Guide Service says trolling around Sunnybank or Mack Bar is a good way to catch fish. The action has been inconsistent around the Yacht Club. Try using F-7 flatfish in Luminous Chartreuse or Purple Glow off the downriggers, Jones said.
