Mike Reid forgot how good just a couple of words from his peers sounded.

The words “great playing,” came from every direction after Reid’s win last weekend at The Tradition in Central Oregon.

“I don’t think I knew how much I had missed hearing my peers, my friends say (that),” Reid said on Thursday, the eve of the Boeing Classic in Snoqualmie. “It’s been a while since I’ve heard that.”

It’s been a whirlwind last few days for Reid, who thanks to his second major victory on the Champions Tour didn’t have to spend the early part of this week qualifying for the event at the TPC Snoqualimie Ridge.

Reid even spent part of Thursday over at Sahalee Country Club in nearby Sammamish, where next year’s U.S. Senior Open will be played.

“I’m just very grateful to be out here, and play, and be part of this tour and be playing,” Reid said.

Garcia tied for lead

Seven days ago, Sergio Garcia wasn’t even sure if he would be eligible to play in The Barclays for the start of the PGA Tour Playoffs for the FedEx Cup. Suddenly, he has a splendid view from the top.

Garcia shot a 6-under 65 at Liberty National in Jersey City, N.J., to share the lead with Paul Goydos and Steve Marino.

Three shots behind in a tie for 11th is Puyallup golfer Ryan Moore, who won the Wyndham Championship last week in a playoff after Garcia lost his lead on the back nine.

“We are getting back into it,” Garcia said. “Last week was nice. … We’re just looking forward to hopefully finishing the year well here, keep this good momentum going.”

Garcia is a two-time winner of the Barclays, both at tree-lined Westchester.

That puts him in a familiar spot, same as Tiger Woods. The Barclays is the only tournament Woods has played at least three times without ever finishing in the top 10. He shot a 70 Thursday.

Chip shots

Top-seeded Tim Jackson lost his second-round match, 1-up, to Charlie Holland, and Steve Zeigler birdied the last two holes of his third-round match against Dan Woltman then won in 22 holes as the U.S. Amateur field was narrowed to the quarterfinalists at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Okla. … Eleven members of the Solheim Cup-winning U.S. team return to work today when the LPGA Safeway Classic starts at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club near Portland. … The USGA has awarded the 2014 U.S. Senior Open to Oak Tree National in Edmond, Okla., site of the 1988 PGA Championship. … Paul Lawrie shot a bogey-free 67 in rainy conditions for a one-stroke lead over a quartet in the Johnnie Walker Championship in Scotland.
