Plenty of yards, but few points.
In an SPSL Class 3A matchup Saturday, Enumclaw and Franklin Pierce combined for more than 500 yards of total offense, but each team could break into the end zone only once.
But the Hornets maintained possession of the ball the final six minutes, and a safety in the third quarter lifted visiting Enumclaw to the 9-6 victory.
“We’re just having a hard time finishing right now,” Enumclaw coach Don Bartel said. “Last week, we had 75 plays for 350 yards, and tonight they slowed the tempo down. They were able to get pressure on us and we were driving the field, and they were ‘bend but no break.’ ”
Franklin Pierce, which was plagued by nearly 20 penalties, are off to an 0-2 start, while the Hornets improved to 2-0.
“The Cardinals haven’t been in this position in a ton of years,” Franklin Pierce coach Howard Lutton said of his team. “We are fighting to return to some semblance of self-respect and identity.”
After going scoreless for the first three quarters, Franklin Pierce used a 15-play series to eat up the first six minutes of the fourth. Quarterback Bradley Wheeler capped the drive with a 3-yard touchdown play.
When it seemed as if the Cardinals would get another possession with less than two minutes remaining, yet another penalty set them back.
“Controversy in finishing is kind of Enumclaw-Franklin Pierce right now,” Lutton said. “They did a really nice job. They’re a solid team.”
Enumclaw junior Andy Holdener broke the scoreless tie in the second quarter with a 3-yard touchdown run. The junior finished with 77 yards rushing on 11 carries. Andrew Gamblin led the Hornets with 91 yards rushing on 17 carries.
The shortest player on the Franklin Pierce roster, 5-foot-5 junior Jamar Murray, had a big interception to put the Cardinals on their own 10-yard line late in the third quarter. But a botched snap left Wheeler in the end zone taking a safety.
Wheeler completed 8 of 15 passes for 98 yards and an interception. Enumclaw’s Riley Carel completed 13 of 20 for 96 yards and a score.
“Our kids are in good shape,” Bartel said. “They’re working hard and they’re doing what they need to do to get the wins. I know they need to feel what it’s like to really finish.”
