The lights went out, the courts darkened and a media day like no other in Cavaliers history was canceled after just two hours.
Maybe with LeBron James and Shaquille O’Neal, Cleveland has too much superstar power.
The duo’s first public appearance together as teammates was cut short Monday when the electricity went out at the Cavs’ training facility in suburban Independence, Ohio, forcing the team to improvise for O’Neal’s interview and reschedule the event.
While it might seem the high-profile James-O’Neal pairing could seemingly overload any circuit, high winds were blamed for the outage. Even before the building dimmed at 3:41 p.m., it was already evident that James and O’Neal are the NBA’s newest marquee act.
More than 150 media members swarmed on Cleveland Clinic Courts for their first chance to talk to the larger-than-life All-Stars.
“Day One of the madness,” Cavaliers guard Mo Williams said, surveying the cameras, microphones and reporters.
Fastbreaks
Lamell McMorris, the lead negotiator for the locked-out NBA referees, removed himself from the talks Monday in hopes of resolving a dispute that threatens to have replacements on the floor this week. … Orlando extended the contracts of general manager Otis Smith (through 2011-12) and coach Stan Van Gundy (through 2010-11). … Miami coach Erik Spoelstra said players may no longer participate in social networking while at work, meaning no more Twitter. “We’ll have strict rules on it,” the coach said Monday at the team’s media day. “The NBA has put in strict rules about it. Social media, we will not accept that in our building during office hours.”
