CommentsSerena Williams overcame Svetlana Kuznetsova, 7-6 (6), 7-5, in the group stage of the WTA Sony Ericsson Championships on Tuesday in Doha, Qatar.
The win gives her a share of the lead in the Maroon Group with Elena Dementieva, who rallied from a set and a break down to beat defending champion Venus Williams, 3-6, 7-6 (6), 6-2.
The tournament features the top eight players in the world. The top two from each group advance to the semifinals.

Top-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga served 14 aces and needed two tiebreakers to beat Kevin Kim of the United States, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5), in the first round of the Lyon Grand Prix in France. … Top-seeded Marin Cilic eased past qualifier Alejandro Falla of Colombia, 6-2, 6-3, in the opening round of the Bank Austria Trophy in Vienna. … Serena Williams is back on the U.S. Fed Cup team for the first time since 2007. Surprise U.S. Open quarterfinalist Melanie Oudin also is on the roster announced Tuesday by the U.S. Tennis Association for the Nov. 7-8 final against host Italy.
