Faced with one big-gamble play to win it, Peninsula coach Ross Filkins didn’t hesitate to put it in his players’ hands.
With an appearance in the Class 3A state playoffs on the line, Filkins opted to go for the two-point conversion and the win instead of kicking the extra point in double overtime on Saturday night.
But halfback Darrian Creamer was stopped about two yards short of the end zone, and Glacier Peak held on in a 49-48 double overtime thriller in a Class 3A preliminary-round playoff game at Roy Anderson Field in Purdy.
“It’s the way we play,” a somber Filkins said. “You got one play to win it, I trust our kids. I’d do it again.”
The play capped a crazy game that saw both teams score on their lone possessions in both overtimes of the Kansas tiebreaker.
After Creamer’s 1-yard run put the Seahawks in position to tie with an extra point, he got the ball again as Peninsula went for two and the win.
“It was pretty tough when you get that close and you can’t finish,” said the senior, who rushed for 256 yards and five touchdowns.
The Seahawks led 35-13 with 3 minutes, 30 seconds left in the third quarter on a 5-yard touchdown run by Creamer.
But the offense ran out of gas, which left the door open for Glacier Peak (8-2) gunslinger Zach Richter, who led the Grizzlies back, eventually tying the game on a 16-yard touchdown pass and the ensuing kick with 4:22 left in the game.
Richter threw another touchdown pass in the first overtime and the Grizzlies got a touchdown run by Alex Stepanchenko that was the difference.
Richter carved up the Peninsula secondary to the tune of 441 yards, completing passes to six different receivers.
Peninsula (8-2) looked great early, as JR Grosshans faked a handoff and found a wide-open Johnnie Johnson streaking down the middle of the field for an 80-yard touchdown pass on the first offensive play of the game.
After Glacier Peak went three-and-out on its first possession, the Seahawks got the ball back and struck quickly again.
Creamer took a handoff, cut right and sprinted 83 yards down the sideline for the Seahawks’ second score in as many plays.
The Grizzlies cut the lead to seven on a 2-yard touchdown pass from Richter to Tanner Southard with 4:21 left in the first quarter.
The score stayed that way until Glacier Peak’s 34-yard field goal attempt was blocked by Jake Boley.
An alert Geoff Grant picked up the ball and sprinted 88 yards for a touchdown.
Creamer added another touchdown run of 47 yards with 4:43 left in the half as the Seahawks led 28-13 at the half.
