Heralded freshman John Wall grabbed an inbounds pass, raced down the court and made a 15-foot jumper with six second to go to give No. 4 Kentucky a 72-70 win over Miami of Ohio on Monday in Lexington, Ky.
“John Wall catching it and going, I loved it,” new Kentucky coach John Calipari said.
Wall finished with 19 points and five rebounds in his debut as the Wildcats (2-0) survived a challenge by the RedHawks (0-2).
Considered the top high school player in the country when he signed with the Wildcats last spring, Wall had to sit out Kentucky’s opener last week, suspended for accepting improper benefits from his AAU coach.
“When it hit the bottom of the net, it was a relief, a great feeling,” Wall said.
