Rumors were flying across Twitter and South Sound-focused Web sites Thursday after The News Tribune’s Inside Opinion blog wrote that President Barack Obama might make an appearance at the Tacoma Dome in the spring.
United Way of Pierce County Director Rick Allen said local representatives are plugging the possible appearance with the White House.
The idea is for the president to show up at the annual United Way event that recognizes South Sound youth who have been involved in community service. Allen said the United Way received a call from the White House saying the idea is being considered.
“We’ve all got our fingers and toes crossed,” Allen said Thursday night.
Allen said he persuaded local politicians to pester the White House. A spokesman for U.S. Rep. Norm Dicks, D-Bremerton, said the congressman was asked to help. Now, United Way officials have to wait because White House officials said they can’t plan events so far in advance.
Tickets would be about $20, Allen said.
