Native arts from around the country featured at In The Spirit Native American exhibit
Featuring works from 21 Native American artists, the annual In the Spirit contemporary native arts exhibition will open this weekend at the Washington State History Museum, 1911 Pacific Ave., Tacoma, and continue through Aug. 12. The exhibit connects the historical society’s Native American collections with the work of current artists. Works include mixed media, paintings, beadwork, textiles, sculptures, carving and basketry. The artists hail from Washington, Idaho, Montana, Michigan, Minnesota, Vermont and Virginia. The Arts Awards Ceremony will be at 3 p.m. Sunday. There will be gallery talks on July 19 and the Northwest Native Festival on Aug. 11. Tacoma’s Maritime Fest tips its hat to storied waterfront history
Celebrating the history of Tacoma’s waterfront, the Maritime Fest will mark its 25th year this weekend by bringing together an array of waterfront organizations: industrial, environmental, recreational and nonprofit. The two-day event — 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday at the Foss Waterway Seaport, 705 Dock St. Tacoma — will feature tours of dock-side vessels, including Odyssey, Curtis and Veirite. Celebrities, toy experts, activities and more at Toy and Geek Fest
The Washington State Toy and Geek Fest takes a comic con and adds toys, vehicles and exhibits. The festival at the Washington State Fair Events Center, 110 Ninth Ave. SW, Puyallup, will offer cosplay and industry and celebrity panel discussions, along with toy experts, artists and family-friendly activities. Support STEM education at garden tour
Discover the beauty of local gardens at the Puyallup Valley Garden Tour from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday. Supporting STEM education, the Puyallup Valley branch of the American Association of University Women will sponsor the tour of six gardens. There will be garden art vendors, food and music. Tickets are $20 in advance or $25 Saturday. Brit solo star Dua Lipa performs at WaMu Theater
Starting out performing covers on YouTube, the British singer Dua Lipa has won the EBBA Public Choice Award, the Brit Award for British Female Solo Artist and British Breakthrough Act. Her hits include “Be the One,” “Hotter than Hell” and “Blow Your Mind (Mwah)” and she was featured on Sean Paul’s “No Lie.” She will perform at 8 p.m. Monday at WaMu Theater, 800 Occidental Ave. S., Seattle. Annual air, car and bike show kicks off July Fourth holiday
One way to start celebrating the Fourth of July is the Eighth Annual Wings & Wheels show this weekend at the Tacoma Narrows Airport, 1208 26th Ave. NW, Gig Harbor. It will feature an air, car and bike show, along with vendors, a beer garden, kids zone, plane rides and jet car races. There will be music by the U.S. Army rock ‘n’ roll band, Courage; Kim Archer; the Spud Mashers; and the Jim Valley Project (formerly of Paul Revere & the Raiders.) Hours will be 4-9 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $15-$20 with military and senior discounts; kids younger than 4 are free. Adult fun after hours at Fort Nisqually Living History Museum
Adults will take over the Fort Nisqually Living History Museum at this summer’s Homespun Happy Hour After Hours events. The three nights will feature “make and take” 19th century crafts, adult beverages, food and live music. The 21-and-older events at Point Defiance Park will offer scrimshaw, felting, spinning and rope making on Friday (June 29); tinsmithing, candle-making, decoupage and paper-marbling on July 27 and leatherwork, sewing, beadwork and basketry on Aug. 24. Crafters will delight at the summer Urban Craft Uprising show
Billed as Seattle’s largest indie craft show, Urban Craft Uprising is coming to Seattle Center Exhibition Hall, 305 Harrison Ave., to support, grow and showcase the area’s best handmade crafters.
