Open art studios and a garden tour are good excuses to catch a ferry to Vashon Island

Vashon Island’s short ferry ride from Tacoma can give visitors a near, yet far, day trip vacation — especially when those trips coincide with island events.

Any trip to the island can be filled with hikes, beach visits, wineries and cideries, dining and shopping.

Three weekends of art studio and garden tours in May and June offer visitors an excuse to explore Vashon and Maury islands’ art and gardening scenes.

Art studio tour

After a two-year COVID-19 hiatus, Vashon Island Visual Artists (VIVA) is bringing back their spring studio tour May 7-8 and May 14-15.

The tour includes 36 studios and galleries representing 90 artists working in a variety of media, including painting, ceramics, photography, jewelry and more.

The self-guided tour runs 10 a.m.-5 p.m.. Admission is free.

More information can be found at vivartists.com.

Garden Tour

Vashon and Maury islands are known for their private gardens, many on large tracts of land and hidden behind foliage.

The Vashon Center for the Arts is holding a garden tour June 4-5 that opens private gardens for viewing on both islands.

This year’s tour includes pop-up garden art galleries and a plant sale.

Tour participants can visit the Vashon Center for the Arts’ gallery and see a quilt show located there.

The tours run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets are $40.
