Fall weekend to do: Pink Floyd planetarium show, Rocky Horror and annual apple squeeze
Did autumn sneak up on you, too? After a week of much-needed rain, fall is officially upon us, and, lucky for you, we found plenty of events to keep you busy this weekend.
Friday: Pumpkin spice cider and a Pink Floyd planetarium show
What’s a more iconic fall duo than pumpkin spice and local cider? Starting Friday, Incline Cider House will be offering some fall ciders, including pumpkin-infused blends, pumpkin cider flights and mulled cider. Visit the cider house downtown at 2115 S. C St.
If pumpkin spice isn’t your thing, check out Pierce College’s Science Dome for an all-ages planetarium show from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday. The theme is “Undiscovered Worlds: The Search Beyond Our Sun.” Learn about astronomy, the solar system and fly through the night sky without leaving your seat. Tickets can be purchased online or at the door. The cost is $8, but free with a Pierce College student ID. Visit the Pierce College Science Dome, 9401 Farwest Dr. SW in Lakewood.
Starting at 7:45 p.m. is a special planetarium show called, “Pink Floyd: Dark Side of the Moon 50th Anniversary” to commemorate 50 years since the release of the band’s iconic album. The show combines breath-taking views of the universe and solar system played out to 42 minutes of “The Dark Side of the Moon” in surround sound. According to the planetarium’s description, the show is Pink Floyd approved. NSC Creative led the visual production efforts working closely with Pink Floyd’s long-time creative collaborator Aubrey Powell from Hipgnosis. General admission is $15.
Saturday: Fiber fling and Rocky Horror
Did you take up a pandemic sewing project? An all-ages Fiber Fling is happening from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Tacoma’s Old Town Park to celebrate all things textiles and sewing. Enjoy live music, peruse handmade goods sold by local makers and bring your latest craft project to chat with other fiber artists in the sit-and-stitch area. Among the fiber arts featured are quilts, embroidery, macrame, knitting, weaving, crochet, needle felting, sewing, dyes and prints. The event is hosted by the Job Carr Cabin Museum and will take place at 2350 N. 30th St.
Tacoma is part of a 48th anniversary tour of the cult classic “Rocky Horror Picture Show,” which first opened in 1975. The Pantages Theater is featuring the live shadow show Blue Mouseketeers at 7:30 p.m, with a treat: the actress who played the original Magenta character, Patricia Quinn. Tickets range from $39-$65, plus fees, with a VIP meet-and-greet optional add on. Better hurry, before the show sells out.
Sunday: Apple squeeze and pumpkin patch opening weekend
Perhaps the best way to kick off the first day of October is to celebrate the humble apple. The Steliacoom Historical Museum Association is hosting the 48th annual Apple Squeeze from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday with apple-related vendors, fresh-pressed cider and live music. Back in the day, apple cider was made with hand-operated presses. That cider will be available for purchase in gallon-sized jugs. Also featured are hot or cold cider by the cup, apple butter, apple fritters, apple pie and ice cream, and more. Kids activities will be offered in the tennis court area, and a street fair will feature a variety of handcrafts as live music plays throughout the day. The event will take place at 1801 Rainier Street, Steilacoom.
Sunday marks the opening weekend of Huntting’s Pumpkin Patch and Haunted Forest, in Cinebar. Pick from thousands of pumpkins and gourds, get lost in the Corn Maze, hop on a hayride, send a goblin egg slingshot (the haunted forest is open Friday and Saturday nights, from dusk until 11 p.m.). Visit from 10 a.m. until dusk and grab a hayride before 6 p.m. The farm address is 600 Cinebar Road, Cinebar.
