Velocity is playing at PLU Jazz Under the Stars concert
Bring your blanket or lawn chair and picnic while enjoying the entertainment at the annual Jazz Under the Stars at Pacific Lutheran University. The 7 p.m. performance this week is Velocity with a musical style gounded in funk, latin and jazz. The concerts are held every Thursday through Aug. 13. Performances are held at the Mary Baker Russell Amphitheatre, 1010 122nd St. S., Tacoma, and are are free to the public. Chase Gardens in Orting open for tours
Be inspired or just enjoy the beauty of Chase Garden as it opens for tours Wednesday. Designed and constructed by Ione and Emmott Chase in the 1940s, the garden embraces a naturalistic design that pays tribute to the landscape of the Pacific Northwest. Sitting on a bluff overlooking the Puyallup River valley, it boasts spectacular views of the mountain.
The garden at 16015 264th St. E., Orting, is open for self-guided tours Wednesdays-Sundays through October with guided tours available on the fourth Saturday of the month. Hours are 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Admission is $8; free for children younger than 12. For more information, go to chasegarden.org.
Poetry reading welcomes back Tacoma native, Geffrey Davis
For all you poetry and prose lovers, make it out for a Poetry Reading with Geffrey Davis, Abigail Pollokoff and Catherine Bresner at King’s Books, 218 St. Helens Ave., Tacoma. Welcoming back Tacoma native, Geffrey Davis, having received the Anne Halley Poetry Prize, the Dogwood First Prize in Poetry, the Wabash Prize for Poetry to name a few honors, will be reading. Also coming out is Abi Pollokoff whose works have apeared in “14 Hills” and “Bayou Magazine plus Catherine Bresner who is the author of the chapbook “The Merriam Webster Series” and whose poetry has appeared in “The Pinch,” “Cream City Review” and “Burntdistrict.”

Charles Dickens and illustrator exhibit at Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum
Discover the hidden gem that is the Karpeles Manuscript Library Museum, 407 S. G St., Tacoma. A Charles Dickens exhibit is on display, featuring a selection of manuscrips, contract, illustrations and original printing plates. Also on display is Joseph Clayton Clarke, also known as Kyd, one of the best known illustrators of Dicken’s characters illustrations from several of Dicken’s works. The museum also features cabinets of historic manuscripts, letters and documents showcasing American history and heritage. Hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesdays-Fridays. It's free; call 253-383-2575.
