GET OUT: Comedy, Polar Plunges, First Day Hikes

Comedian Roy Wood Jr. performs at the Tacoma Comedy Club, 933 Market St., Tacoma. With comedy that crosses cultural lines, Wood has been a regular on “Conan,” ESPN’s “SportsNation” and Comedy Central’s “@Midnight.” Showtimes are 8 and 10:30 p.m. Friday (Jan. 1) and Saturday. Polar Bear Plunges:

Metro Parks Tacoma’s plunge is at the Point Defiance Marina, 5912 N. Waterfront Drive. There will be a Cub Plunge at 11:30 a.m. for kids younger than 10 and the adult/family plunge is at noon. For more information go to metroparkstacoma.org.

South Sound annual plunge takes place at Long Lake Park, 2790 Carpenter Road SE, Lacey. The plunge is at 1 p.m. For more information call 360-491-0857.

First Day Hikes: Take advantage of the outdoors and Washington State Parks at the more than 100 state parks. Offerings include guided hikes, fat bike rides, snowshow walks and a 5k run. Tacoma Nature Center by removing invasive plants and rehabilitating sections with native plants. Dress for the weather and prepare to get dirty. The next volunteer work party will be 9 a.m.-noon Friday (Jan. 1.) Children are welcome at the free event, but must be accompanied by adults. The center is at 1919 S. Tyler St., Tacoma.
