Children’s Concert at University of Puget Sound
Taxi horns, banjos and a typewriter solo are just part of the fun at this weekend’s annual Jacobsen Jr. concert at the University of Puget Sound. American compositions from Gershwin (“Porgy and Bess,” “An American in Paris”) to Leroy Anderson (“Bugler’s Holiday,” “The Typewriter”) and John Phillip Sousa will be performed by faculty Duane Hulbert and Jooeun Pak, as well as current music students. The concert begins at 3 p.m. Saturday at UPS’s Schneebeck Concert Hall, 1701 N. Union Ave., Tacoma. Admission is $5, but free for 10-year-olds, and 4 and younger. 253-879-3100, pugetsound.edu.
State Final for Poetry Out Loud
Poetry Out Loud, the national high school competition for poetry performance, celebrates 10 years this year. It is a collaboration between the National Endowment for the Arts, ArtsWA and the Poetry Foundation. See the state finals this weekend at Theatre on the Square, as teens from the region present their selected poems. Seattle circus company Acrobatic Conundrum brings its unique blend of circus, theater and dance to Vashon Island this weekend. Based on the magic realism of Jorge Luis Borges, “The Language of Chance” explores ideas of falling forever, missed connections and nonsensical story, with original music by Pietro Ravanni.
