Tacoma Symphony plays Sibelius, Mendelssohn
Rising youg violinist Caroline Goulding, called “precociously gifted” by Gramaphone Magazine, joins the Tacoma Symphony for the lush Sibelius violin concerto Sunday at the Pantages. Also on the program is the United States premiere of Luis Tinoco’s “Before Spring” and Mendelssohn’s triumphant Symphony no. 5, the “Reformation.” 2:30 p.m. Sunday. $19-$80. Artist craft fair at King’s Books
Tacoma is for Lovers and King’s Books present the annual Artist Craft Fair, just in time for one-of-a-kind artsy holiday shopping. Local makers like Anagram Press, Tim+April, Libertine and La La Laurie will be selling jewelry, letterpress, crafts, ceramics and more. 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday-Sunday. Free. Tacoma Concert Band goes to Paris
Band music under a bridge? This weekend, for sure — the Tacoma Concert Band presents “Hands Across the Sea,” a program including the world premiere of a multimedia composition by Tacoma composer Deborah Anderson called “Under the Bridges of Paris,” and inspired by the same. PLU opera goes to the Underworld
This year’s annual opera production at Pacific Lutheran University takes a can-can attitude to Greek mythology with Offenbach’s “Orpheus in the Underworld,” a light-hearted take on the tale of gods, ghosts and musical heroes with that famous can-can thrown in. Sung in English. 7:30 p.m. Friday (Nov. 20) and Saturday, 3 p.m. Sunday.
