Grand Cinema will roll out red carpet at Oscar party for (non)rich and famous

It’s cinema’s biggest night of the year, but you don’t need to be a Hollywood starlet or quirky film director to get your time on the red carpet. Once again, Tacoma’s home for independent film, The Grand Cinema, is hosting its Academy Awards Party on Sunday at the Broadway Center’s Theatre on the Square.

And yes, there will be a red carpet.

The live 5 p.m. broadcast of the awards show will be projected on a theater-size screen.

“What makes our Academy Awards Party so memorable is that you don’t just watch the broadcast,” Philip Cowan, the nonprofit’s executive director, said. “It is an interactive, community event packed full of festivities, including a film costume contest, prizes for successful awards predictions, plenty of film trivia and Grand Cinema giveaways.”

The general admission ticket includes complimentary snacks, a seat in the main theater, and access to a cash bar and food supplied by Cloverleaf Pizza, Corina Bakery, Wingman Brewers and Stella Artois.

“The main theater is the core of the party,” event organizer Rachel Marecle said. Event hosts will lead film-centric festivities during commercial breaks.

An already sold-out VIP section includes a seat in a private dining and viewing area, a full dinner from Maxwell’s Restaurant + Lounge and two complimentary drinks.
