Anthem Coffee and Tea is expanding again, this time to University Place.
The cafe will replace Frog ‘N Kiwi Cafe, which closed earlier this year. The 2,800-square-feet cafe was known for its family-friendly vibe and giant play area (which was conveniently soundproofed).
This will be the third location for Anthem Coffee, which is owned by Bryan Reynolds. He operates cafes in Puyallup and Tacoma with his parents, Janie and Larry Reynolds, and his wife Alicia Reynolds. They also operate Elements Frozen Yogurt in Puyallup.
Anthem originally was a Forza coffee house in downtown Puyallup, but the family took the coffee house independent and renamed it Anthem in 2011.

Next, they opened Anthem in downtown Tacoma.
When a neighboring cafe exited downtown Puyallup in 2014, Anthem expanded. That expansion led to a bigger menu. The cafe now serves breakfast sandwiches and espresso in the morning and flatbread pizzas, sandwiches and appetizer plates at lunch and dinner. It also offers a list of local beers and wines. The same menu is served at the Tacoma location.
The University Place location will follow the same format with coffee in the morning and beer, wine and cafe fare in the evening.
Plans for the University Place location call for replacing the old Frog ‘N Kiwi play area with open seating. Reynolds plans to remove a portion of the play area wall to give the cafe an open feel similar to the Puyallup location.
He expects room for at least 75 diners, maybe more, at the University Place Anthem. He also expects to have a private meeting area with seating for 15-20. That space would be available for reservation.
The decor will stick with the modern-industrial motif that Reynolds created at the other two Anthems, where he’s used reclaimed wood and other vintage architectural pieces from Tacoma’s Earthwise Architectural Salvage.
Expect an opening later this fall, Reynolds said.
As he plans the University Place project, he already is working on the next.
By mid-2018, he expects the fourth Anthem to open in Tacoma’s Stadium neighborhood. That location is planned for the retail-residential apartment building at 102 N. G St. that’s currently under construction.
