Proving yet again that people want to do everything in their living room without changing out of their pajamas, another restaurant delivery app has launched in the Tacoma area.

It’s called Grubhub, and it works in a similar fashion to UberEats.

Restaurants listed on the app are partners with Grubhub, whose app can be downloaded on Android and Apple devices.

Diners also can access delivery through the grubhub.com website.

For now, the delivery area of Grubhub is limited to Tacoma proper and University Place. No news yet on when it might expand to Puyallup, Lakewood, South Hill, Gig Harbor or outlying areas of Pierce County.

Keith Chapman with Grubhub said more than 90 restaurants have signed up so far, and the company expects more Tacoma restaurants to come on board. Diners can log into the app or website and scroll through the list of participating restaurants.

“We have an agreement with each and every one of our restaurants,” said Chapman. “ We only deliver from restaurants that want us to deliver their food. Also worth noting that each of our restaurants have our technology in their restaurants, so they know that they are fulfilling a Grubhub takeout order when it comes in.”

For restaurants signed up in the Tacoma area, service fees this week have generally ranged from $1.99 to $4.99. That’s the amount charged for the delivery service, on top of the cost of the food.

Chapman said those fees could vary but won’t by much. That’s the only service fee the company charges, he said.

The app will continue to add restaurants, said Chapman.

“Grubhub continues to partner with restaurants in Pierce County as we grow the Grubhub Delivery offering in the Tacoma area. Grubhub works with any and all restaurants that are interested in partnering with the platform,” he said.

The Grubhub app has operated in some capacity here since 2011 and has worked with restaurants that supply their own drivers, according to the company, but this is the first time Grubhub’s own network of drivers has operated in Tacoma.

This is the third restaurant delivery app to launch in the last year. UberEats launched in Tacoma in Feburary 2017. DoorDash launched in November.
