Today’s tour of tacos isn’t really about tacos. It’s about doughnuts. Shaped like tacos. South Hill’s Epic Donuts is one of those newcomer doughnut shops that features a host of straightforward doughnuts, but also a range of “novelty” doughnuts. You know the kind. They’re stuffed with peanut butter or cereal, topped with bacon, or shaped like boats or aliens or feet.
At Epic Donuts, every Tuesday is “doughnuts shaped like tacos” day. The doughnuts usually come in three or more flavors. They’re 90 cents each, or $10 for a dozen. Owners Tom and Erin Dobrinski said they keep baking more every week, but they usually run out by 1 p.m. (You can reserve a dozen by calling the bakery.)
A visit earlier this month found taco-shaped doughnuts in three flavors. Maple-bacon tasted exactly as that sounds — an ode to the breakfast plate. The Mariners mousse doughnut was topped with a creamy frosting and blue and green sprinkles. One “taco” doughnut was topped with crumbled Pop Tarts and a squiggle of fruity frosting. I’m hoping they’ll offer one stuffed or filled soon. Maybe peanut butter or cereal?
