On today, this drizzling, gray and mighty cool Monday, I'd like to add something to your list of things you should go eat this week: A big plate of S.O.S. for under $4. For the newly returned cold weather dining, it's grub that sticks to your ribs and may help soften the rough transition to the return of the ARGH&^%&* rain that amazingly everyone has forgotten how to drive in. Not that I'm bitter about this morning's drive to the office or anything.
I found this magical plate of meat gravy over toast at Kimberly's Cafe, a cute little bistro-esque spot that opened in July in the space where Vive Bene once operated. The woman in the kitchen, Kimberly Connell, is the granddaughter of the man who owned Lakewood's Burs Restaurant for 27 years. So that explains the perfect execution of S.O.S., which for the purpose of this family-friendly blog, I simply will call Substance on a Shingle.
What I liked most about Kimberly's S.O.S. was the peppery gravy - it was medium-thin without being too runny or too thick, it was creamy and rich in a "I really should not tell my doctor I'm eating this AWESOME plate of fat" sort of way. And it was cheap - $3.95. And the S.O.S. came with hash browns. I couldn't believe the bargain. When Shelly, the News Tribune budget watcher and Newsroom Den Mother, tells us that month-end expenses must be filed, a $3.95 plate of just about anything tasty is a very good find for my stomach, soul and expense report.
Kimberly's is a small, cafe where details appear tended - water goblets that remain filled, table linens, cloth napkins and a pretty atmosphere with butter colored walls and a sharp checkerboard tile floor. I am aware of the lunch and dinner menus (they looked interesting), but I visited the restaurant for breakfast after sniffing out the S.O.S. on the menu and spying a few other appealing breakfast dishes. My sniffer steered me right - Kimberly's produced tasty, affordable breakfasts and the adorable little cafe now joins two other restaurants that make Lakewood a breakfast destination - Moon Rise Cafe and Carr's. I'll have a review of Lakewood breakfast restaurants later this week. Watch for it here and in the GO section.
