Netshed No. 9 - Gig Harbor's newest waterfront restaurant - will open Thursday. The restaurant will operate at 3313 Harborview Drive. The menu is all about breakfast - listing everything from sourdough ricotta pancakes to chicken and waffles, stuffed biscuit sandwiches, sausage breakfast burgers with tomato jam, chilaquiles, ham steak, frittatas, scambles and waffles made on 100-year-old waffle irons. The restaurant is from husband-wife restaurateurs Thad Lyman and Katie Doherty. The duo bought Gig Harbor's Brix 25 four years ago after operating restaurants in Napa Valley and working in other California kitchens. They're both Northwest natives - they met while working at Stanley & Seafort's. Doherty is a South Sound native, Lyman is from Alaska.
They'll offer a few sandwiches - like the Reuben listed on the menu below - but they intend to make Netshed No. 9 a breakfast destination, offering the best meal of the day during all operating hours.
Menu prices hover around $9-$12. Specialty beverages include sweet tea and a house-made hot chocolate. The restaurant will offer table service, kids and families are welcome, and deck seating will be people- and pet-friendly when the weather warms.
Minor cosmetic changes have been made to the interior of the building that has housed restaurants in recent years - Red Rooster most recently and the cheese cafe Isa Mira before that. The setting will be casual with a nautical theme in keeping with Gig Harbor's penchant for all things maritime. Speaking of which, the name of the restaurant is a nod to Gig Harbor's network of historical netsheds, which were a pivotal part of the city's historical commercial fishing operations. The city refers to the building that will house Netshed No. 9 as the Novak (Stearns), or Netshed K as it's listed on the city's registry. Doherty said the name they selected reflects the nickname fishermen gave their building. Doherty stumbled upon old articles that referred to the Novak shed as "number nine, " the ninth shed viewable as fishermen returned to shore.
The restaurant is an idea that's been percolating for Doherty and Lyman since they returned to the Northwest to purchase Brix 25, but the timing and real estate weren't right until now. They've been collecting materials for the restaurant idea for years. Lyman's pile of kitchen implements includes antique waffle irons that are about 100 years old.
