On June 22, Terry Waller will close her tea and sandwich shop at South 12th and Proctor and will head downtown to what she believes will be a better home for Olive Branch Cafe. She’ll open around Aug. 1 at 731 Commerce St., Tacoma.
I wrote about Waller here when I visited local antique malls outfitted with sandwich and dessert cafes. At Waller’s charming space, I found sandwiches with a homespun edge. Considering the shoebox size of the kitchen, Waller turns out great eats.
In March 2012, she opened Olive Branch Cafe, leaving behind a night job working at Western State Hospital. When Waller opened Olive Branch, she was tucked into the corner of a building that held antique vendors. It was a location she liked because of the affiliated foot traffic. After the antique tenants moved out of the building, and another business followed, Waller went looking for a new home. She’ll share her new space on Commerce with a catering company.
Waller said she intends to keep a similar sandwich menu - I like the chicken pesto on focaccia ($7.95) - and she’ll expand tea service, which includes high tea. She said the look and feel of the cafe will be quite similar.
