Three new eateries have opened around the South Sound. Domo Sushi in Gig Harbor is now serving an extensive menu of Japanese sushi and specialties, but also delves into Korean and Chinese dishes. The casual eatery Taste of Peru also has opened in Gig Harbor. In Puyallup, the New Orleans themed Bourbon Street Bar and Grill opened last week. Mike de Alwis has opened his downtown Puyallup restaurant Bourbon Street Bar and Grill. The New Orleans inspired restaurant is serving a limited menu now (see photos below), but will expand its offerings in the coming weeks. Entrees on the dinner menu now are priced in the $10-$15 range. I dropped in anonymously last week and found a menu very similar to what de Alwis had promised - affordable steaks, seafood and Louisiana-Cajun specialties, such as gumbo and jambalaya.
The months-long construction project transformed the former gas station into an attractive haunt. Diners are relegated to two seating options - a tiny area for family-friendly dining with about 17 seats (all but one table are high-tops, which might be difficult for families with small children needing high chairs). The bulk of the seating is in the restaurant's bar, open to diners over 21. Check back for a first-bite report on Thursday.

The Vasquez family has opened its Peruvian restaurant in Gig Harbor. Locals will recognize owner Betty Vasquez and her children, who have served Peruvian specialties for 14 years at farmers markets from Gig Harbor to Kingston. Now, her tamales, ceviche, quinoa and anticuchos are available at Taste of Peru, a casual cafe that opened two weeks ago in a shopping center of Olympic Drive Northwest (next door to Taco del Mar).
Diners will appreciate moderate prices and tasty, healthy Peruvian cuisine that ranges from meat-stuffed tamales to hearty quinoa scrambles. Good news for vegetarians - there's an impressive selection of veggie offerings.
Taste of Peru marks something needed for South Sound – the opening of a restaurant featuring a menu focused on Peruvian cuisine. Restaurants of that type have operated here before – such as Chasqui in James Center in the 1990s – but Peruvian food can be difficult to find here unless you know someone willing to cook it for you. The owners of Mana Sushi in Port Orchard have brought a hybrid sushi restaurant to Gig Harbor. Domo Sushi opened last week. The menu offers a lengthy list of maki sushi rolls, nigiri, sashimi and other Japanese favorites, but also branches into Chinese and Korean offerings. The restaurant looked dynamite on my visit - soaring ceilings and expansive windows translate into an airy restaurant with a decor that swings modern and industrial. A dine-in sushi counter seats a dozen. The soundtrack on my visit was hilarious - from modern techno to J-Pop merged with opera. The restaurant is next to the newly opened Lunchbox Laboratory.
