The downtown Tacoma outpost of Lakewood’s Original House of Donuts opened last week at the corner of South Ninth Street and St. Helens Avenue.
An early-morning visit found the bakery case filled with the same style of doughnuts offered at the Lakewood outpost — because that’s where all the doughnuts are actually made. That bakery has operated since 1959.
Lakewood’s House of Donuts was opened by Bob and Marilyn Cheatham. Their bakery became widely known as home of “the cake maker,” the nickname given to the doughnut machine that once churned out cake doughnuts at the 1962 World’s Fair in Seattle.
The machine was in use at the bakery until two years ago when Tom Peterson, a first-time bakery owner, purchased the bakery from the Cheatham family. Peterson grew up in the Lakewood area and graduated from Clover Park High School. He kept most everything the same, including keeping the bakery’s recognizable vertical “Donut” sign just off Gravelly Lake Drive, but did update the appearance of the bakery’s interior. He also added a new lineup of doughnuts and tacked on the word Original to the longtime name House of Donuts. In 2014, he expanded to a doughnut truck that appears at food festivals throughout the region.

Doughnuts at the Tacoma bakery are priced $1-$2.50 each or $12.50-$13.50 per dozen.
