The Tacoma restaurant Smoke + Cedar announced Wednesday it will close permanently Sunday after the restaurant’s brunch service. Lunch and dinner service will continue as usual until then.
The restaurant opened in March 2014 at the Allenmore Golf Course clubhouse lodge, 2013 S. Cedar St., which is owned by the Tacoma Elks Lodge No. 174.
Because of a nondisclosure agreement with the Elks Lodge, owner Gordon Naccarato declined to talk specifically about the reasons for the closure, but said he and the lodge had agreed to go their separate ways.
Lodge chairman James Guthrie said in an email statement, “The parties have agreed to part ways and end the landlord/tenant relationship.”

Naccarato described the closure as “painful” and said via email, “We have certainly had our share of challenges at the Allenmore location, but I was really proud of where our food and service ended up, with a good core of guests that appreciated the brand we created.”
In his email, Naccarato hinted at projects in the works.
“As we close Smoke + Cedar we look to other opportunities in downtown Tacoma, and indeed we are working on three new projects as I write this.”
One project he said he was considering is moving his Pacific Grill Events Center to the Foss Waterway area, which would free up his downtown events space for another restaurant.
Naccarato is a co-owner or partner in several other businesses, including Pacific Grill, the Pacific Grill Events Center and Catering, Classics by Pacific Grill at LeMay-America’s Car Museum and Shake Shake Shake, a Stadium neighborhood restaurant co-owned by Tacoma artist Robert Stocker and Naccarato’s brother, Steve Naccarato.
The Naccarato brothers also operated the Beach House at Purdy from 2002 to 2008.
Gordon Naccarato said Smoke + Cedar gift cards and rewards cards will be honored at Pacific Grill. Staff members are contacting diners with reservations to reschedule at Pacific Grill.
“We will continue to cater any contracted events at the banquet spaces,” he said.
As for Smoke + Cedar staff members, some will move to other businesses owned by Naccarato, including executive chef Alex Anton, general manager Christopher Johnson, the bar manager, the sous chef and a few servers.
“There are a number of talented people that we will be unable to find positions for, which is the saddest part of closing,” Naccarato said. “They are a hard-working, passionate group that believed in creating a great experience for our guests, and I would be happy to recommend any number of them.”
