Christina Smyre will pick up where Charlie McManus and Jacqueline Plattner leave off with their Sixth Avenue pub, Crown Bar.
She takes ownership of the bar at 2705 Sixth Ave. in December.
McManus and Plattner opened the bar in 2007 in the former home of Gary’s Steak Out and Bar. Crown Bar serves an extensive list of cocktails, upscale burgers and a host of international pub and street food in an atmosphere based on a traditional Belfast pub.
“We’ve had a great eight years of ownership,” McManus said.

“We’ve cemented the Crown Bar as central to Sixth Ave., but she’s going to take it to the next level. We’ll still have a symbiotic relationship. We’re excited to be neighbors,” said McManus, who owns the building in which Crown Bar and their neighboring restaurant, Primo Grill, reside.
Smyre already knew McManus and Plattner. She previously worked for Bargreen Ellingson, one of the restaurant companies that last year assisted McManus and Plattner in moving their 16-year-old Primo Grill from South Pine Street and Sixth Avenue to a new home at South Oakes Street and Sixth Avenue. Smyre has several years of experience as a restaurant consultant specializing in opening new restaurants.

Smyre plans to keep the name intact. “There’s some loyalty to the name,” she said, noting the bar’s 2013 appearance on the Food Network show, “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives.”
She ticked off a short list of changes that included tearing down a wall separating the bar from the dining room. That project likely will close the restaurant for a few weeks in January, but that’s the extent of the physical changes.
Smyre, a Fircrest resident, said she plans to add lunch service and is considering weekend brunch during football games. She’ll add a number of televisions to the pub to broadcast sporting events.
“I want to expand the menu and make it more rounded out,” said Smyre, who said she’ll increase the happy hour offerings. “I’ll add more tap handles,” she added.
So what’s next for McManus and Plattner?
“For us, we are going to be focusing on our core business, which always has been Primo and working the menu and working all of the things we’ve always wanted to do with Primo,” McManus said.
That means more fiddling with housemade items, such as the sausage and pasta that McManus has been featuring lately. Plattner, who manages the restaurant’s beverage menu, plans to further expand her cocktail offerings, including her line of steeped liqueurs and homemade schnapps.
“We’re excited for her — we think she’s the right person. She’s really talented. She has a lot of connections in Tacoma and she has a lot of business experience. The place needs an owner to be there. We’ve done what we can, but we were really distracted with the opening of the new store. She’s going to be the person there who will love it the way it deserves. We’re excited for her,” Plattner said.
