Just as with coffee, adding a splash of dark beer can deepen the flavor of anything to which it’s added. Stews, braises, even bread. But a doughnut?
Yes, in a doughnut. In the hands of Original House of Donuts it’s not as weird as it sounds.
The Lakewood-based doughnut bakery, with another location in downtown Tacoma, debuted its March doughnut-of-the-month special last week. It’s a pairing of the Grit City Porter from Tacoma’s Pacific Brewing and Malting and the Original House of Donut’s cake doughnut.
The porter added a deep, malty note, but the slight bitterness was offset by the sweet Irish cream icing and chocolate crumbles. For those who eschew the bitter notes of beer, this one’s not for you. However, if you’re the kind of diner who loves a splash of porter in a chocolate cake or digs happily into beer bread, then this is the doughnut for you.
