Check out the taplist for Tacoma’s Brew Five Three festival

It’s known as Tacoma’s Beer and Blues Festival, but I like to think of Brew Five Three as the unofficial annual Pierce County beer festival. Of the 35 breweries pouring at this Saturday’s festival, 13 brew in Pierce County.

Other than the brew festival held for Tacoma Beer Week, Brew Five Three is the largest gathering of South Sound brewers at a single venue. Five cideries also will attend.

The annual block party, now in its fourth year, will be from 1-8 p.m. Saturday and is hosted by the Broadway Center for the Performing Arts.

It’s a daylong ode to suds, cider, food trucks and blues bands. The event sprawls between two blocks on Broadway, from Ninth to 11th streets.

Here’s a look at what’s happening:

Pierce County brewers: 7 Seas Brewing, Engine House No. 9, Gig Harbor Brewing Co., Harmon Brewing Co., Narrows Brewing; Northwest Brewing, Odd Otter Brewing Co., Pacific Brewing and Malting, Powerhouse Restaurant and Brewery, Ram Restaurant and Brewery, Tacoma Brewing Co., Wet Coast Brewing Co. and Wingman Brewers.

Each brewery will pour two-three beers. On your must-drink tap list should be:

Harmon Brewing Co.: Head brewer Jeff Carlson said the Tacoma brewery would tap its Belgian India pale ale; Shinto Sour Dark Ale, Hop Triangle IPA and T-Town Razzbeery. The Shinto Sour will be an unusual find. That’s a dark beer — a combination of the brewery’s Stryker Stout and Expedition Amber — barrel-aged for 52 months.

Gig Harbor Brewing Co.: John Fosberg of the Tacoma-based brewery said he’d bring his brewery’s Kopachuck Citrus Pale Ale; the Round Rock India Pale Ale and Sturdy Gertie Double IPA, which Fosberg described as, “Brewed with seven distinct hops, all beautifully balanced by seven malts providing an intense sensory experience — the fresh aroma of citrus, pine and grapefruit and a bold taste of hoppy sweetness.”

Engine House No. 9: Matt McGovern from the Tacoma restaurant and brewery said the brewery would tap its Obligation India pale ale and its Deux Cinq Trois (which is French for 253). He described it as a “light, orange-marmalade colored Belgian style pale ale. We utilize a farmhouse-style yeast strain to achieve funky aromas and earthy flavor. It is rounded out by subtle hops with emphasis on herbal flavors and snappy, mineral bitterness.”

Other Pierce County taps: Pacific Brewing and Malting will tap Independence Pilsner (from its sister brewery, American Brewing Co.) and Montamara Summer Ale. From Wingman Brewers, there will be Cream Ale and Chocolate Coffee Chili Stout. Narrows Brewing will bring its Giant Octopus India Pale Ale and its Belgian Brown Ale.

Eats: Serving food at the event will be the food trucks Lumpia World, Viet Nom Nom, Stacks and Burrito Boy.

Live music: The Paul Green Blues Band will perform at 1:30 p.m.; Rod Cook and Toast at 3 p.m.; Barleywine Revue at 5 p.m. and Stacy Jones Band at 6:30 p.m.

Tickets: Expected to sell out. $30, includes six tastes and a glass. 21 and older only (identification required for entry).
