A new reality TV show that takes a look at unusual inheritances features Tacoma’s first family of cars, the LeMays.
“Strange Inheritance” premieres this week on Fox Business Network. Host Jamie Colby notes that at some point in our lives we will all probably inherit or bequeath something.
“Often the stories behind why the item is collected, kept and passed down is as exciting as the inherited item itself,” Colby said.
Colby isn’t interested in cash or the family home. She’s looking for rare baseball cards, dinosaur fossils found on a ranch, a taxidermy or insect collection.

It “may not be in your personal field of dreams but learning how they were discovered, what they are worth and what a family does with their inheritance has in most of our stories twists, turns and surprises,” Colby said.
And that brings us to Tuesday’s episode on the LeMays. Harold LeMay was the garbage collector-turned-reputed world’s most prolific car collector with more than 3,000. LeMay died in 2000, and parts of his collection now rest in two Tacoma museums: the LeMay Family Collection and LeMay – America’s Car Museum.
The LeMay family is still actively involved with the Family Collection and that’s where Colby shot her episode. Both Doug (Harold’s son) and Nancy (Harold’s widow) participated in filming of the show, Colby said. It was a hands-on experience for her, she said.
“I learned to crank start and drive a Model T, sat in a car designed like a red stiletto shoe and I witnessed Mrs. LeMay making lunch for the hordes of volunteers who show up daily to keep the enormous and varied collection in pristine condition,” Colby said.
Colby, an attorney in private practice, has advised clients on accumulating wealth. But the show was her first opportunity to see what happens when someone disposes of an estate.
“My advice to folks after talking to these families – particularly adult kids trying to figure out what their parents would want them to do – is to have those discussions before it’s too late,” she said.
And if you have a strange inheritance, Colby wants to hear from you at http://www.strangeinheritance.com/.
“I can’t wait to see what else is out there,” she said.
“Strange Inheritance” premieres Monday. The episode featuring the LeMays airs on Tuesday.
