Washington State Apple Blossom Festival
WHAT: Started in 1920, the festival is the oldest in the state, according to organizers. The 11-day event includes a carnival, golf tournament, food fair, live entertainment, parades, fun run and arts.
WHEN: April 24-May 3.
WHERE: 2 S. Chelan Ave., Wenatchee.
POPULAR PARADES: About 5,500 people take part in the grand parade watched by an estimated 100,000 people. The parade will begin at 11 a.m. May 2. Wenatchee Valley College has been selected as the grand marshal for the parade. Another 3,500-4,000 people take part in the youth parade, which will begin at 11 a.m. April 25.
APPLE BAKEOFF: The apple pie and dessert bakeoff will be held May 3. Contestants can compete for most original, best presentation, best dessert and best of show.
YOUTH DAY: Activities just for children will run from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. April 26. Free bike helmets will be given to the first 500 children. There also will be inflatable jump toys and more than 35 booths with free giveaways. On the same day, there will be a pie eating contest for kids.
ARTS AND CRAFTS: The arts and crafts fair will run May 1-2 in Memorial Park. There will be an Art 4 Kidz event. Young artists can turn in their work April 16-18, with an awards ceremony on April 26.
COST: Many activities and events are free, but there is a cost for some.
