UPS completes $100M regional hub in Tacoma, bringing jobs and enhanced services
Parcel shipping company UPS has announced completion of its regional ground package sorting and distribution hub.
The hub at 5101 12th St. E. was first announced in 2017, promising hundreds of new jobs along with more automation.
On Thursday, the company said it has created more than 800 full- and part-time jobs at the site, with hiring happening in waves with each additional project phase.
The 777,000-square-foot site also adds automation-driven processing capacity to UPS’ global network, according to a news release.
The site was developed on Port of Tacoma property by Prologis.
The company has spent approximately $100 million on the site, accordiing to information from a UPS representative.
“The significant investment UPS has made in Tacoma is a vote of confidence in the current and long-term health of our local economy and further diversifies our economic base while elevating our vital role in international trade,” said Tacoma Mayor Victoria Woodards in the release, adding that she hopes to see the majority of the jobs “filled by local residents.”
The company also recently opened a new package delivery facility in Hillsboro, Ore., to serve the Portland area.
Shipping companies in general have benefited from an uptick in business during the coronavirus pandemic, as shoppers turn to online ordering to avoid in-person contact with sales.
FedEx this month has pushed to hire hundreds in the Tacoma area.
Job postings for the UPS hub, when available, are posted at www.upsjobs.com.
