Housing product manufacturer James Hardie Building Products is expanding its operations in Pierce County by purchasing a 47-acre manufacturing plant in Frederickson, just south of its current operations.
The $28 million deal, first reported by the Puget Sound Business Journal, closed in early September. The Frederickson Industrial Center, at 4621 192nd St. E, was listed for lease by owner Key Development, but Hardie made an “unsolicited offer” to buy it, the paper reported.
Hardie searched from British Columbia to Oregon for a new plant site, broker Christian Mattson told the PSBJ, but remains committed to Pierce County.
The company will operate plants on both its current site, at 18200 50th Ave E, and at the new site, where it will both expand and build new, according to Mattson.

Hardie employs about 100 people in Frederickson, according to the Economic Development Board for Tacoma-Pierce County. Mattson said the company might double that with this new investment.
