The City of Tacoma is upgrading 17 parking pay stations around the University of Washington Tacoma.
The new machines have brighter and larger screens, making them easier to read at night. The seven-inch color screens also are customizable and may be used in the future to provide visitors with notices such as maps, promotions or event information, according to a city news release.
Like the current machines, the new ones are wireless and solar-powered. The upgrade costs about $2,000, city parking manager Eric Huseby said in an email.
If the machines work well and customers like them, the city will consider retrofitting the rest of the system, Huseby said.
