Avamere Georgian House of Lakewood will lay off 69 employees when it closes in January, although some of those employees may be rehired to serve at a newly remodeled facility in East Tacoma.
The state Department of Labor and Industries reported the layoffs on Thursday, and facility administrator Jessie Wheatley later confirmed the news.
The announcement follows a Nov. 5 report that the Lakewood property would close, Wheatley said.
Current residents, if they wish, will be relocated to the new facility at 3625 E. B St. in Tacoma.
“We have a pre-existing facility that is currently undergoing a $2 million remodel,” Wheatley said of the East Tacoma property.
“We are looking forward to asking a substantial number of employees (to relocate),” she said. “We don’t know what that number will be.”
The Lakewood site houses 73 residents, she said, while the new facility can accommodate 102.
“We anticipate a substantial number of our current staff will be offered positions,” she said.
“We are looking forward to enhancing our residents’ lives by providing a better environment,” she said.
The Lakewood facility, she said, was built in 1956 and was “space-challenged.”
