Long-awaited apartments in Tacoma’s Fern Hill neighborhood now open for leasing

New apartments in Tacoma’s Fern Hill area are open for leasing.

Tacoma-based Harbor Custom Development on Monday issued a release promoting its new Pacific Ridge Apartments, 8445 Pacific Ave.

The first building opened for leasing this month (November), with studios to two-bedroom units ranging from 384 square feet to 1,100 square feet. Rents run from $1,195 to $2,045 a month, with six-month to one-year lease options available.

Pacific Ridge has been under some phase of planning or development since before the pandemic. Initial pre-application plans were first filed with the city as early as 2016.

Harbor Custom Development purchased the 1.85-acre site last year for $2 million.

The project started as condos catering to first-time home buyers but later evolved into apartments.

Harbor Custom Development CEO and president Sterling Griffin told The News Tribune in March that market forces had made apartments more valuable.

“An apartment there today makes more sense for our company than selling condos,” he said.

“We are excited to introduce our luxury apartments to the Tacoma area,” said Jeff Habersetzer, chief operating officer of Harbor Custom Development, in a statement. “We believe the high-quality finishes, proximity to Interstate 5, and local conveniences makes Pacific Ridge an ideal home for renters in the area. The Tacoma market has received the project well as initial rental demand has been strong.”

The apartments feature vaulted ceilings, quartz countertops, stainless-steel appliances, full-size washers and dryers in the units, tiled bath surrounds, private balconies and garages.

“Renters can access the private onsite clubhouse featuring spaces to gather, a kitchen, mail room, parcel lockers, game lounge and a fitness center,” the company said in its release.

The 80-unit complex was one of six area multifamily projects the company offered for sale in April for a combined $278 million. Pacific Ridge is valued at $30 million in the bundle.

Last week, Harbor announced plans to develop 200 luxury apartments in the 200 block of Broadway downtown on undeveloped parcels next to Sky Terrace Condo, with views of the Port of Tacoma and waterfront.
