Chevrolet Express Heads Into 2027 Still Looking Like The '90s

Sticking To The Same Formula

Automakers typically introduce a facelift or mid-cycle update about three years into a model's production run, followed by a major overhaul or next-generation version a few years later. This helps vehicles stay current with the latest trends, remain relevant in the market, and stay competitive against rivals.

But as the saying goes, there is always an exception to the rule, and the Chevrolet Express may be the perfect example. According to GM Authority, the 2026 Express will essentially carry over into the 2027 model year, which could be seen as the Bowtie brand being unwilling to devote significant resources to a major update. On the other hand, it also reflects another familiar saying: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

Chevrolet's Commercial Time Machine

The Express was introduced for the 1996 model year and received its first and only major facelift for 2003. As a result, the commercial van remains instantly recognizable today, though it also appears dated compared to newer rivals such as the Ford Transit. The Transit received a significant update for 2020, and Ford now also offers an all-electric variant known as the E-Transit.

Chevrolet offered an all-electric commercial van under the BrightDrop name, but it is a separate, purpose-built EV and shares little with the aging Express.

But perhaps the most notable development is that General Motors will end production of the Chevrolet Silverado MD later this year. The medium-duty truck reportedly shares an assembly facility with certain Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana Cutaway models, which could make the move significant for GM's broader commercial vehicle operations. Even so, the Express continues to soldier on despite going more than two decades without a major redesign.

Business As Usual For 2027

Because the MY2027 Express will be a carryover, the commercial van will still be offered in cargo and passenger configurations, with the latter available in either LS or the slightly more premium-looking LT trim. The 4.3-liter V6, producing 276 horsepower and 298 lb-ft of torque, will remain the base engine, while the 6.6-liter V8, rated at 401 horsepower and 464 lb-ft of torque, will be available for buyers looking for additional muscle.

The report did not disclose pricing, but for reference, the MY2026 Chevrolet Express starts at $42,200 before destination charges.
