Three fishermen took an unplanned helicopter ride Wednesday evening after a rising tide just inside Willapa Bay left them surrounded by the ocean.
The Coast Guard received a report at 7 p.m. that the men were in danger of being washed off a large rock that can be reached by a short walk at low tide. A Pacific County sheriff's deputy was on scene but couldn't reach the men.
A Coast Guard MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter aircrew from Astoria hoisted the trio from the rock, which was between North Cove and Tokeland. The uninjured fishermen were dropped off on the beach shortly after 8 p.m.
A Coast Guard crew with a 47-foot motor life boat also responded to the scene.
