Human remains found near Mount Rainier National Park, deputies say
The Pierce County Sheriff’s Department is investigating human remains found near the entrance to the Mount Rainier National Park.
The remains were found Thursday morning by workers at a remote logging site on private land above the Carbon River, according to a tweet by the department.
The remains were not buried, but they were partially covered by dirt and bushes, Department spokesperson Ed. Troyer said.
Detectives and forensics investigators used tools to recover a skull, several bones, clothing and a rifle.
There was camouflage clothing found, leading police to believe the person had been a hunter gone missing, Troyer said.
Car keys were also found. Files on abandoned cars previously towed are being pulled, he said.
Deputies are investigating missing persons reports and looking for any possible matches based on shoe size and car keys, Troyer said.
“We are examining records and will work with the Medical Examiner to determine how long the remains were at the site as well as gender, age, & identity,” the Sheriff’s Department tweeted.
The Pierce County Medical Examiner is expected to begin it’s investigation next week.
